Course Overview

Beginning audio editors and assistants will find clear, workflow-driven lessons, while seasoned audio professionals will quickly learn Fairlight’s user-friendly tools to create incredible soundtracks. Upon completing the course, you'll be fully prepared to take the exam and showcase your mastery of these essential audio production skills. Please note that this course does not cover the video editing basics of DaVinci Resolve.

Course outcome

By completing this course, you will master essential aspects of audio editing within video editing workflows, including navigating advanced audio editing tools and interfaces in the DaVinci Resolve Fairlight page. You will gain expertise in voiceover recording techniques and dialogue editing, as well as sound design and enhancement methods. The course will also cover mixing and mastering processes, ensuring your audio meets professional delivery standards. Additionally, you will work with advanced audio formats like Dolby Atmos integration to create immersive sound experiences.

  • Navigate and use the Fairlight page tools to build movie soundtracks
  • Apply voiceover recording techniques and perform Automated Dialogue Replacement (ADR)
  • Use the oscillator to record noise and tones for sound design tasks
  • Edit composite voiceover takes using audio track layers; create crossfades between music clips
  • Prepare multichannel clips for dialogue editing with channel mapping
  • Organize dialogue by character using checkerboard edits on separate tracks
  • Balance clip levels and reduce plosives and unwanted sounds
  • Stitch room tone tracks for seamless dialogue scenes
  • Utilize FairlightFX tools like De-Hummer, De-Esser, Noise Reduction, and gate dynamics processors
  • Enhance soundtracks with creative sound design; transform voiceovers with Pitch and Chorus plugins
  • Add depth to Foley sound effects using time-based plugins
  • Apply mixing tools and techniques to polish and complete audio mixes
  • Bounce stereo and 5.1 timelines to create stems; render final mixes to meet delivery standards
  • Link mono tracks to create a 5.1 surround track and perform panning
  • Work with Dolby Atmos projects and explore Dolby Atmos integration in Fairlight

Prerequisites:

Knowledge: Basic Computer Literacy: Ability to navigate operating systems (Windows, macOS, or Linux).

Experience: Although no specific prior experience with video and audio technologies or Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve software is required, it is advised that students first complete “The Beginner’s Guide to DaVinci Resolve” and “The Editor’s Guide to DaVinci Resolve” courses to prepare for this course.

Hardware: A supported Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve computer

Software: Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve free software license (or studio license)

Access: Internet access - a stable fiber connection of at least 10 Mbps up and down speeds is recommended.
